Katy Trail State Park

Bike, run, walk or ride this incredible 240-mile trail along the northern bank of the Missouri River, a path that follows the former route of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad. Converted into a recreational path starting in 1982, the scenic trail starts just east of St. Charles and continues across most of the state. Want to experience the Katy Trail? St. Charles outfitters will help you rent a bike and prepare yourself for the journey.

What to Pack

You’ll want to bring plenty of water, helmet (if biking), sunscreen and sunglasses, maps, mobile phone, bike repair tools including a spare inner tube and pump, insect repellant, toilet paper, cash, credit cards and camera.

Horseback Riding

You can ride a horse on the 35-mile section between Clinton and the Sedalia Fairgrounds trailhead, or between Tebbetts and Portland. Cyclists, runners and hikers should yield to horseback riders.

  • What is Katy Trail made out of?

The trail is paved with crushed limestone trail (also called limestone pug), a surface that is easy on the legs but perhaps not so much on bike tires. Be sure that your bike is fitted with the appropriate type of tires.
  • What’s the best kind of bike tire for the trail?

You’ll need a tire with a minimum width of 28 to 32 millimeters. Kevlar or aramid belts under the tread are a good idea, to protect against puncture. You also need a tread pattern that is relatively smooth in the center, and knobby (but not grooved) on the edges.
