Saint Louis Gateway Arch

An unforgettable icon of the city, the St. Louis Gateway Arch sits on the west bank of the Mississippi River. Take a tram ride to the top of the monument for breathtaking views of the skyline, up to 30 miles in either direction on a clear day.

Gateway Arch Riverboat Cruises

Ride on a replica of a 19th century paddle-wheel boat along the riverfront under the St. Louis Gateway Arch. Listen to narration about the historic river and its current contributions to the economy and culture of the area. Advance tickets recommended.
 

The Arch's Dimensions & Windows

This amazing structure is 630 feet tall and 630 feet wide at the ground level. The top is 17 feet wide and the foundations are 60 feet deep. At the top you'll find 16 wide viewing windows on either
side of the observation deck.

  • Does the Gateway Arch sway?

    Like all tall buildings, the Gateway Arch is designed to sway. It can move as much as 18 inches, and can withstand an earthquake. It would take a 50-mile-per-hour wind to move the Arch 1.5 inches.
  • How long did it take the Gateway Arch to be built?

    Construction of this iconic monument took about two and a half years, from February 12, 1963 to October 28, 1965. It cost $13 million to build, and was designed by a Finnish-American architect named Eero Saarinen.
